Technical
mastery and a strong supporting cast mark director Bryan Singer‘s
latest 3-D big budget folk tale adaptation of Jack
and the Beanstalk
and the darker Jack
the Giant Killer.
In
the medieval village of Cloiste, farmer Jack (Nicholas Hoult) trades
his horse for a handful of beans. Soon he is uprooted by a rapidly
towering beanstalk that connects the human world with the legendary
land of gruesome, man-eating giants, who strive to descend to Earth
to claim the land they once lost. When Princess Isabelle (Eleanor
Tomlinson) is lost high up in the beanstalk, Jack joins King
Brahmwell’s (Ian McShane) rescue team led by palace guard Elmont
(Ewan McGregor) and the King’s trusted advisor Roderick (Stanley
Tucci).
State
of the art effects, especially of the epic battle scenes and the
impressive beanstalk, embellish Gavin Bocquet’s stellar production
design, while Bill Nighy steals the show as General Fallon, the
two-headed monster leader.
Breathtaking
moments capture the imagination of the young with thrilling
adventures, well balanced action and, at times, silly playfulness,
with the underlying message that heroes aren’t born but made.
